YSK that a majority (52%) of 18-29-year-olds in the United States live with their parents. Your economic situation is vastly different than previous generations, and living at home is not the stigma it once was.

Why YSK. As a young person, your ability to leave your parent's home and find your own place is largely determined by factors outside of your control. Employment, pay, and cost of living all factor into your ability to be on your own. Since the 1960s, when about 30% of young people lived with their parents, the number of young adults that live at home has steadily risen. As of 2020, according to the Pew Research Center*, the majority of young adults (52%) still live at home.

A lot of people like to criticize young adults who still live with their parents. Don't let them. There hasn't been this high a percent of people living at home since the Great Depression. (And even at the height of the Great Depression it was only 48%.) Those who claim that younger generations are lazy, entitled, etc., are often doing so from a recollection of a much rosier economic situation.

You don't live in the 1960s, or the 1980s, or even the 2000s. The economic factors limiting young adults today haven't been this bad in nearly a century. Living at home as a young adult is not only the only option for many, but for many others it is a much better economic choice than spending all your money on rent.

Living at home is fine.

*These numbers don't take into account the significant rise in rents and inflation over the last 2 years.
